Overview
The designed world needs people to run it. Design engineers make the products, systems analysts model how organisations use technology, IT technicians keep the machines running, and entrepreneurs turn ideas into businesses. PNG has real pathways into all four — through UNITECH, UPNG, TVET colleges, DataCo, Digicel and small startups.
Four families of roles
Design engineer — invents products or improves them. Systems analyst — studies how an organisation uses technology and recommends changes. IT technician — installs, configures and repairs systems. Tech entrepreneur — builds a business around a technology idea.
Pathways in PNG
University degrees (UNITECH, UPNG, DWU), TVET certificates and diplomas, corporate cadetships (Digicel, PNG Power, BSP), and self-taught + freelance work using online resources.
Ethics of technology work
Every tech role affects people. Engineers must think about safety, analysts about privacy, technicians about honesty in charging clients, and entrepreneurs about the community. The best professionals put people first.
