How do we identify a component, read its ratings, and decide if it fits our circuit?

Overview
In Grade 11 you met the main electronic components. In Grade 12 you learn to analyse them: read the schematic symbol, decode the body markings, look up the datasheet, and check the ratings against your circuit. Getting this right is what separates a working prototype from a fried board.
Symbols and body markings
Every component has a schematic symbol used in circuit diagrams and a physical marking (colour bands on resistors, numbers on capacitors, part numbers on ICs). Being fluent with both lets you move between the drawing and the board.
Ratings and tolerance
A resistor might read '220Ω ±5%' — a nominal 220 ohms with tolerance up to 11 ohms either way. A capacitor has a maximum voltage; exceeding it can rupture the part. Always design with the worst case in mind.
Reading a datasheet
Datasheets from manufacturers list absolute maximum ratings, typical values, and pin diagrams. Learn to find the 'Absolute Maximum Ratings' table first — that is the safety envelope you must stay inside.
Component identification station
- Rotate through five stations: resistor, capacitor, diode/LED, transistor, IC.
- At each station, record the schematic symbol, the reading from body markings, and one datasheet value.
- Compare answers with a partner and correct any mistakes.
