Course Orientation & Grade 11 Diagnostic Review

Week 1 · Benchmark Course orientation and diagnostic review of Grade 11 ICT
Essential question

What do I already know, and what will Grade 12 Term 1 add to it?

Learning objectives
  • Outline the Grade 12 Term 1 course, assessment plan and lab rules
  • Recall the key ideas from Grade 11 hardware, administration and robotics
  • Set a personal learning goal for the term

Overview

Term 1 of Grade 12 ICT builds directly on what you learned in Grade 11 — hardware, administration, and robotics — and pushes further into simulation, circuit design with CAD, systems thinking, and careers. This week we open the course, refresh our safety habits, and see where you stand with a short diagnostic quiz. By the end of the week you will have a clear picture of what to focus on this term.

Course map

Term 1 has 10 weeks and covers Unit 1 — Computer Architecture. You will design and run simulations, learn about electronic components at a deeper level, use CAD to draw circuits, and study how technology systems are integrated to solve real problems.

Assessment at a glance

Your grade will come from practical work (60%) and theory (40%). Big pieces are a Simulation & Electronics Design Project (30%), weekly lab work (20%), an end-of-term written exam (25%), participation (10%), and short quizzes/assignments (15%).

Lab safety refresh

Follow the ICT lab safety contract. Report faults early, never eat or drink near a PC, log out when finished, and treat components like the delicate electronics they are.

Activity

Course goal & diagnostic

  1. Take the 15-question Grade 11 recall quiz your teacher will hand out.
  2. Score it in class. Circle the two topics where you scored lowest.
  3. Write ONE SMART goal for Term 1 that targets one of those weak areas.
Review questions
  1. What are the two largest weightings in Term 1 assessment?
    Reveal answer

The design project (30%) and the end-of-term written exam (25%).

  2. Which unit does Term 1 cover?
    Reveal answer

    Unit 1 — Computer Architecture.

  3. Give one lab rule that protects the hardware.
    Reveal answer

No food or drink near PCs (any reasonable answer).
