Emerging Technologies in PNG
What is the next big change coming to Papua New Guinea?
- Identify emerging tech relevant to PNG
- Explore m-banking, e-health, smart agriculture, e-learning
- Present benefits and risks
Overview
PNG's geography once made new tech arrive slowly. Mobile and satellite changed that. Today, m-banking, e-health, smart agriculture and e-learning are already reshaping the country.
Four use cases
M-banking: transfer money by phone even without a bank branch (Cellmoni, MiCash). E-health: rural clinics send X-rays to specialists in Port Moresby. Smart agriculture: sensors and drones improve yields. E-learning: sites like this one bring lesson materials to phones anywhere in the country.
Benefits and risks
Benefits: reach, cost, speed, inclusion of rural areas. Risks: dependence on power and network, cyber-fraud, digital divide (not everyone has a smart phone yet). Good policy invests in both technology and digital literacy.
