Overview
Computing did not begin with electricity. It began with fingers, tally sticks, knotted string and stones — tools that let people record and calculate more than memory allowed. Each later invention solved a limitation of the one before it: the abacus made calculation faster, mechanical calculators removed human arithmetic error, programmable machines removed the need to rebuild the machine for each new job, and electronics removed the speed limit of moving parts.
Counting before machines
People first counted with fingers, pebbles, tally marks on wood and knotted cords. In PNG, shell money and tally sticks recorded value and obligation long before written arithmetic. These methods are accurate but slow, and they cannot store large amounts of data reliably.
The abacus
The abacus (about 3000 BC, Mesopotamia and later China) uses beads on rods to represent place value. A skilled operator can add, subtract, multiply and divide very quickly. It is the first true calculating device — but the human still supplies every step of the method.

- Ada Lovelace (1843): Wrote an algorithm for the Analytical Engine — regarded as the first computer programmer.
- Herman Hollerith (1890): Punched-card tabulating machine used for the US census; his company later became IBM.
- Alan Turing (1936–1945): The theoretical model of computation and codebreaking machines during World War II.
Characteristics of the modern computer
Speed (millions of operations per second), accuracy (errors come from the data or the program, not the machine), diligence (no tiredness or boredom), versatility (one machine, many jobs), storage capacity, and automation (it follows a stored program without step-by-step human control).
