Overview

Computers are classified by processing power, size, number of simultaneous users and cost. Choosing the right class is an engineering and budget decision: a supercomputer is wasted on word processing, and a laptop cannot run a national payroll for a million people.

The classes

From the largest and most powerful downwards.

Class · power · typical use:

  1. Supercomputer: Fastest available; weather and climate modelling, nuclear and molecular simulation, national research.
  2. Mainframe: Very large, extremely reliable, thousands of simultaneous users; banking, airline booking, census and tax systems.
  3. Server / minicomputer: Serves a department or an organisation; file, web, database and email services.
  4. Workstation: A single powerful desktop for engineering, CAD, video editing or scientific work.
  5. Microcomputer: Desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone — one user at a time. The class you use daily.
  6. Embedded computer: A processor built into another product: a router, a car engine unit, a digital scale.

How to choose

Ask four questions: How many users at once? How much data? How fast must results come back? What is the budget, including power and cooling? In PNG, power reliability and the availability of local technical support are often the deciding factors.

Artificial intelligence in modern computing

AI systems learn patterns from data instead of following only hand-written rules. You already meet AI in phone keyboards that predict words, in translation, in bank fraud detection and in medical image screening. The benefits are speed and scale; the risks are bias in training data, job displacement, privacy loss and over-trust in outputs that can be confidently wrong.

  1. For each scenario, name the class of computer you would recommend and justify it in one sentence: (a) the PNG National Weather Service forecasting a cyclone, (b) a bank processing every ATM transaction in the country, (c) a school office keeping student records, (d) an architect drawing a hospital in 3D, (e) a student writing an assignment.
  2. In pairs, list three tasks in your school that AI could help with, and one risk for each.
